Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
this book was such a refreshing, beautiful read that i devoured it in one weekend. i'm coming to find i love historical fiction, so the world of geisha in Gion in the 1930s, with all it's expectation and tradition, seemed to swallow me whole. golden's narration through the voice of a young japanese girl, sayuri, gave me some skepticism at the start, but by the end i found myself convinced and impressed. he filled the book with rich culture and nuances, and he generously explained them all in great detail. the imagery was great in this book, as was the character development of sayuri. the best part of this book was the poetic ending - the kind of ending that leaves the reader bittersweetly mourning the conclusion of what had become a beautiful life.
