the city and the symmetry

tonight we broke down the framework that surrounds this town
we drank it in our gin and tonics, we absorbed it with 33 cent songs
selected out of the digital jukebox, a hesitant reflection of what's inside
a throwback to simpler times, but the concept has withstood the years.

we spent our monday night in a dive bar on the south side of town
and coming home we crossed bridges without endings, the radio
choosing lifehouse as our momentary soundtrack (you never get a say
in these matters anyway) laughter spilling over from the backseat.

the cold crystallizes on our breathe as we wait for the heat to kick in
we crest and come down into the city we call home, a small, sleepy place
all white and symmetrical at midnight, perfect vision of artwork in the skyline
the placement of snow and stars, to guide us home, to remind us

that we wouldn't have it any other way.

...

we are still kids sometimes, and that is okay.
